SPEAKER ORATEUR: JAMES RUBIN
James P. Rubin served under President Clinton as Assistant Secretary
of State for Public Affairs and Chief Spokesman for the State Department
from 1997 to May 2000.
In that capacity, Mr. Rubin conducted daily on-camera briefings
for the State Department press corps and represented the administration
in print, radio, and television interviews regarding U.S. diplomatic,
foreign economic and national security policies.
Mr. Rubin also served as a top policy adviser to the Secretary of
State from January 1997-May 2000 and as principal adviser to the White
House on the Department's public affairs activities.
Mr. Rubin is a partner at communications consultancy, Brunswick
Group, a Visiting Professor of International Relations at the London
School of Economics, and host of the PBS series Wide Angle, a new
primetime, weekly international affairs program that premiered in
July 2002. Mr. Rubin contributes frequent commentaries to the Financial
Times and a number of other major American and European newspapers.
He is also a regular guest on CNN, BBC, SKY and other television networks.
He serves on the board of the International Rescue Committee UK and
Columbia University School of International Affairs. He is also a
member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Prior to his Presidential appointment, Mr. Rubin was Director of
Foreign Policy and Spokesman for the Clinton/Gore '96 Campaign. From
May 1993 until 1996, Mr. Rubin served as Senior Adviser and Spokesman
for U.S. Representative to the United Nations, Madeleine K. Albright.
From 1989-1993, he was a Professional Staff Member on the U.S. Senate
Committee on Foreign Relations and Senior Foreign Policy Adviser to
Senator Joseph R. Biden, Jr. (D-DE). From 1985 to 1989, Mr. Rubin
was the Research Director for the non-profit Arms Control Association
in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Rubin received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science
from Columbia University in 1982 and a Masters in International Affairs
in 1984.
In 1998, Mr. Rubin was the recipient of Columbia University's John
Jay Award for Distinguished Professional Achievement. In 2000, he
received the State Department's highest honor, the Distinguished Service
Award.
He lives in London with his wife, Christiane Amanpour, and their
son, Darius John Rubin.
