During his seven years as Prime Minister, he instituted public sector reforms that became international models and left behind the strongest economy Britain had seen in decades. Mr. Major initiated an unprecedented effort to secure lasting peace in Northern Ireland and continues to work closely with Prime Minister Tony Blair on that issue.

Still a member of parliament, John Major also serves on several prestigious boards, including the European advisory board of The Carlyle Group, based in Washington, D.C.
On the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, John Major was appointed legal guardian to Their Royal Highnesses Princes William and Harry. He serves as president of the National Asthma Campaign and patron of the Child Achievement Awards, also working closely with the Royal National Institute of the Blind, the National Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Children and the Consortium for Street Children.

In 1991, as Prime Minister Major was chairing a meeting of the Gulf War Cabinet, terrorist missiles attacked 10 Downing Street. Mr. Major, resolved to proceed with initiating the Northern Ireland Peace Process, established counter-terrorism measures to protect the UK mainland from further attack.

During the Gulf War, working closely with President Bush and the Gulf coalition partners, Mr. Major presided over anti-terrorist protection mechanisms and instigated discussion at G7 Summits for co-ordinated action against the spread of international terrorism.
