JEAN-LUC DE HAENE
Prime Minister of Belgium 1992-1999
From 1974-1978 he was Head of Cabinet, first to the Minister for Economic
Affairs and then to the Head of Flemish Affairs. In 1979 he was appointed
Head of Cabinet to the Prime Minister Wilfried Martens.
He was Minister for Social Affairs and Institutional Reforms from1981-1988
before being appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the Communications
in 1998, a position he heald for four years.
In 1992 he became Prime Minister. He was re-elected in 1995 and remained
in office until 1999.
Jean-Luc Dehaene is a central character in European development over
the past twenty years and is renowned for his desire to see closer European
co-operation and integration amongst its members.
